Saroo Munshi Khan was only five years old when he got lost somewhere far from his hometown in India in 1986.
1986년 인도에 있는 자신의 고향으로부터 멀리 떨어진 어딘가에서 길을 잃었을 때 Saroo Munshi Khan은 겨우 5살이었다.
Late one night, he got off a train at Burhanpur Station after traveling for hours with his older brother.

Saroo was so tired that he collapsed in a seat on the platform and fell asleep.

When he awoke, he couldn't see his brother anywhere.

But there was a train in front of him.

He thought, "Perhaps, my brother is on that train."

He searched the train for a long time crying out for his brother desperately, but he couldn't find him.

After traveling nearly a thousand kilometers across the country,

Saroo wandered around the train station feeling scared and frustrated.

He ended up living on the streets for a few months as he begged for food and shelter.

Subsequently, he was put in an orphanage.

There, in 1987, he was adopted by an Australian family, and he moved to Tasmania.

In Australia, Saroo settled down in his new home.

He was given a new last name, Brierley.

He couldn't remember its name, but memories of his hometown and his family remained fresh in his mind.

As he grew older, he started to search for his long-lost home using online maps and satellite imagery.

Exploring with these technologies was like flying over the earth.

At first, Saroo randomly explored the web of railway lines that led out of Howrah.

However, the railways were seemingly endless, and he was left at a loss.

To make the search easier, he roughly estimated how far he had probably traveled on the train.

Using the time that he had been on the train and its likely speed,

he calculated that he must have traveled about 960 kilometers to Howrah.

He continued a painstaking search based on this distance.

One day, in 2011, he discovered Burhanpur Station.

Following the railway upwards, his eyes drifted across another familiar area and froze.

He saw the waterfall where he used to play.

Then he spotted a three-platform train station with a big fountain.

He had found Khandwa―his home.
그는 그의 고향인 Khandwa를 찾은 것이다.
Saroo visited India months later in early 2012.

He traced his way back to Khandwa and followed his memories to Ganesh Talai, the neighborhood where he had grown up.
그는 Khandwa로 가는 길을 되짚어 보고 그가 자랐던 동네, Ganesh Talai로의 기억을 따라갔다.
However, when he arrived at his old home, the door was locked and the house looked abandoned.

Just then, a neighbor appeared, and Saroo showed a picture of himself as a child and asked about his family.

The neighbor said that they didn't live there anymore.

After a few minutes, another neighbor showed up.

When he found out who Saroo was, he took him to a nearby house to let him see his mother.

At first, Saroo didn't recognize her.

But after a brief moment, he realized that her face was the one he had been trying to find for so long.

A neighbor who could understand English translated his amazing journey into Hindi.

She nodded several times.

For many years, she had searched along the train tracks that led out of town.

Saroo followed those same tracks back to Khandwa 25 years after losing his way and, finally, returned to his mother.
