3. What is winnowing?

Small sieves are used in kitchens to separate impurities from flour, while larger sieves are used in construction sites to separate stones from sand.

2. What do you mean by immiscible liquids? How are they separated?

Ans. Immiscible liquids form separate layers in a mixture, such as oil and water. To separate them, the mixture is placed in a separating funnel and allowed to stand. The different liquids can be tapped out one by one by opening the stopcock.

4. How would you prepare crystals of sugar?

5. How is common salt obtained from sea water?

1. Describe a simple experiment to show the distillation of water.

Ans. Take some salt and water in a pan, then place a dry lid over it. Slowly heat the mixture until the liquid begins to boil. After a few minutes, remove the lid with tongs and you will find water droplets condensed on the inner side of the lid. Collect this water in a clean vessel by tapping the lid. By repeating this process, you can collect more and more pure water. The remaining solid in the pan is the salt you started with.

2. You are given a mixture of salt and sand. How would you separate them?

Ans. Put salt and sand in a beaker, then pour water into it and stir vigorously. Warm the water occasionally to dissolve the salt completely. Filter the mixture and wash the residue 4-5 times with hot water. Evaporate the filtrate until it dries, resulting in a white solid, which is salt. The residue left on the filter paper is the sand, which can be dried in the sun.
